SAFETY NET

The seemingly disparate programmatic needs of the Community Court and the Fire Station are united through one core value: civic service. This project brings together those who serve the community and those who rely on these services through an equitable, accessible, and sensitive distribution of space.

The microclimate created under the organic timber grid shell forms a safer counterpoint to the harsh overpass of I-35, under which many unhoused individuals gather. The Fire Station is separated from the Community Court in key areas, providing privacy for sensitive programs such as decontamination and dormitories, while the two civic service programs overlap in shared spaces such as the courtyard and fitness center.
