OCULUS ACOUSTICS
Oculus Acoustics offers flexible shared workspaces for musicians to practice and record while doubling up as a performance venue. Located in the world capital of live music Oculus Acoustics parametrically derives its form from mapping the locations of important music venues around the city. Acoustics were prioritized giving the building its booleaned spherical shape and unique listening experience
+MAPPING
Drawing overlapping circles my mapping the distance between the site and iconic music venues around the city such as the Broken Spoke and Cactus Cafe against their venue capacity. The circles are then interpolated into a 3d volume with intersecting spheres.
+MASSING
The booleaning creates a double negative allowing for multiple interiorites and a variety of spatial conditions without the need for traditional walls.
Exploring the formal qualities of subtractive and additive booleans through cast concrete. The weight of the concrete is subverted by suspending it with delicate fishing wire giving it the appearance of floating in space
+OCULUS
The oculi respond to the solar angle and temperature to provide different shading conditions maintaining comfortable conditions inside without the need to excessive AC
+OCCUPATION
Strategically placed floorplates vertically define space while the boooleans define space laterally. The lack of traditional walls in the public and performance spaces invites people into the building subverting the exclusivity associated with live music and concerts. The sculptural quality of the spheres also inspires whimsical creativity and encourages play.
